Historic Havre de Grace, Maryland Day Trip


Your day begins at the Susquehanna Lockhouse Museum located in the restored Lockhouse keeps home on the banks of the Susquehanna River, the museum recalls the days when Havre de Grace was terminus of a canal system that reached into Pennsylvania.

Decoy Museum: The Havre de Grace Decoy Museum celebrates a genuine American folk art. See the work of many recognized master carvers and backyard craftsmen of the Upper Chesapeake Bay Region. The heritage of decoy making is reflected in the hunting decoy and now in the ever popular decorative decoy carving. The Havre de Grace Museum is a privately funded, non-profit organization which exists to document and interpret waterfowl as this art form applies to heritage of Havre de Grace and the Chesapeake Bay.

For nearly two centuries, The Concord Point Lighthouse marks the spot where the Susquehanna River meets the Chesapeake Bay and has guided boaters to safe harbors. During the War of 1812, it was the site of a British bombardment of the village. You'll hear the story of how the Concord Point Lighthouse keeper's daughter saved her father's life after he was captured by the British.

Havre de Grace was a major hub for water-related commerce and recreational activities on the Upper Chesapeake Bay. The Havre de Grace Maritime Museum was incorporated in 1988 to preserve this great maritime heritage and lifestyle. Artifacts, memorabilia and photographs from these exciting eras are on display. The Maritime Museum Building is home to the Chesapeake Wooden Boat Builders School. Students are taught skills required skills required building, restoring and conserving wooden boats. The Susquehanna Flats Environmental Center is located in the museum where the surrounding marshes, flats and streams provide ideal location for marine research, education and interpretation.

Havre de Grace boasts over twenty antique shops and specialty stores. Following lunch, you will have time to browse through them and find some treasures to take home. We will also make a visit to Bomboy's Homemade Chocolates, a family operated, award winning shop where chocolate and home made ice cream delicacies are sold.

Meet your guide alongside The Susquehanna River in Port Deposit (narrowest town in the USA) for orientation, and a wonderful tour of The Paw Paw House Museum (c.1787) and Tomes Memorial Methodist Church (c.1872) for a wonderful look at this most unusual town all constructed of Port Deposit Granite. Then off to the other side of the river. Havre de Grace, for lunch at MacGregor's or on your own. After lunch we visit The Susquehanna Lock House (c.1826), The Concord Point Lighthouse, and/or The Decoy Museum. For the sturdier sailors, why not cruise on the Skipjack Martha Lewis? At the end of the day, we must stop at Bomboy's for homemade candy and ice cream before heading home.
