The City of Havre de Grace is located in the mouth of the Susquehanna River. Havre de Grace is well protected from the West, Northeast, East, South, and Southwest directions. Protection is required from the North-Northwest winds that result from cold fronts that occur primarily in the winter months. Protection from the Southeast is also desirable. Southeasterly winds occur primarily during late summer-fall tropical storm passings and during the winter months from low pressure cells off the coast. Most of these weather events occur during the off season when boating activity is at a minimum.

The areas adjacent to Havre de Grace offer ample protection for any vessels over 25' in length, throughout the boating season. There are times when there is wave action that would prohibit the operation of smaller vessels, but this condition would exist throughout the entire northern bay area and vessels would be restricted to port everywhere.

The marinas in the area have stored boats on moorings here for decades without any problems except in rare extreme weather events when they must be relocated within the marinas. The City Yacht Basin offers transient day slips at no charge, overnight slips at $1.00/foot, weekly at $.50/foot per day, and monthly at $9.00/foot. Electric is available for an additional fee. Other local marinas offer similar rates. The Yacht Basin offers fuel, ice, bait, showers, mail and parcel delivery, weather, tide, fishing, and boating information, transportation connections, informational literature, and numerous other services to serve the visiting boaters. Some boaters, who visited the Yacht Basin as transients, enjoyed their stay so thoroughly that they are now permanent slip holders.

Many transient boats are anchor off Havre de Grace during the summer months. Currently, the local marinas offer transient dockage for 50+ boats at any given time. Annually The City of Havre de Grace has over 500 transient boats each season.
